Interest Groups
Below is a list of the current interest groups, a summary of what they do, when they meet, and contact information for the group leader. It is a great way to meet people and make friends. All groups are open to all members and their spouses.
Hiking Group -During months when the weather permits hiking outside we will meet up once a week - mostly on Thursday mornings.You do not need any hiking experience. Please contact Amanda Haasken at ahaasken@comcast.net or 540-250-7795 for more details.
Wine Tasting - The group meets up once a month (sometimes more) during the Newcomers Club year (Sept-May). Past events have included wine tastings at a members home, trips to local wineries, dinner at Chateau Morisette and tastings at Zeppoli's. Coffee Break Book Club - There are two Coffee Break Book Clubs that meet up every first Tuesday of the month from 9:30 - 11:30am at the home of one of our members. We read a mix of books ranging from classicsand fiction to biographies and youth novels. Our group is very relaxed and fun,and we love a good discussion. Movie Group - The Movie Group meets once a month on a Wednesday for dinner and a film at either Regal Cinemas or the Lyric. We have 30 members in this group and typically each month we have between 4-10 members attend the outing. So far this year we have seen Eat, Pray, Love, The Switch, The Social Network, Morning Glory, Love and Other Drugs, Country Strong, No Strings Attached, and The King’s Speech. Please join us! Mondays at the LyricMovie Group –We will meet at least once a month and maybe more on Monday mornings at 10:00 to watch a movie at the Historic Lyric Theater in downtown Blacksburg. There is free popcorn on Mondays too! Please contact Jennifer Perdue at perduejl@gmail.com if you are interested in joining.
Scrabble Group - Scrabble has an afternoon and an evening group. Both meet twice a month. The afternoon group meets on the second and fourth Monday of the month at 2 p.m.; the evening group meets on the first and third Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. The sessions last not longer than two and a half hours. Out to Lunch Bunch - This group gets together on a monthly basis and tries different restaurants in the area. The leader of the group sets the date and usually finds the restaurant each month.Communication is through email. Generally 5-10 people show up for lunches and each month it can be a different set of people, although as with most groups there are 3-4 core members who try to attend each month. Gadabouts - Historically, this group was opened to those members who had been active in the club for 3 plus years. However, with the new by-laws, this group will be open to all members.
