Our speaker for the May 12th meeting is Meredith Hoggart.

She is the Unit Coordinator and Agriculture & Natural Resource Agent for the Virginia Cooperative Extension office.

Meredith Hoggart will be talking about her partnership with Paige Walters, MCPS McKinney-Vento Liaison, and Julie Fox, MCPS Social Worker, to support unhoused and low-income families at MCPS. They are offering a slow-cooker tasting events featuring three budget-friendly, canned-ingredient meals. Families leave with the ingredients of their favorite meal, a crock pot, recipes, and kitchen supplies. Meredith also works with nonprofit organizations to address food insecurity by expanding access to fresh, locally produced foods. Most recently, she helped lead a $150,000 Local Food Purchase Assistance Program Plus (LFPA+) initiative in partnership with the YMCA at Virginia Tech.
Her programs do not receive funding from the county or the state, so she must find her own support to provide impactful programs for our community.

Members who wish to support these efforts may bring donations of the following canned goods to make meal kits for participants: no bean chili, pinto beans, red kidney beans, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, chili seasoning packets, mixed vegetables, hominy, canned chicken, stewed tomatoes, and dry onion soup mix. You may also make checks payable to “Treasurer, Virginia Tech”, noting the purpose (e.g., “Virginia Cooperative Extension- Meredith Hoggart”) in the memo line.
