Our speaker for the September 8th meeting is Jami McQuain

Associate Director of Resource Development at the YMCA at Virginia Tech

​​

Jami McQuain will be discussing how the YMCA connects VT students with community support organizations that are available in the community.  These organizations help expand food access, support youth and families (especially internationals and newcomers), and reduce isolation.  The end goals include preparing future leaders committed to social change..

 

 

 

 

 

 

Donations at Meeting

Donations of household items can be made directly at the YMCA located at 1000N. Main St., Blacksburg.  During our September meeting, BBNC members can make monetary donations (cash or check made out to the YMCA at VA Tech), and non-perishable food items (peanut butter, canned goods, dry pasta, etc.)

Dr. Michelle R. Stocker, PhD - Professor Vertebrate Paleobiology Virginia Tech

“Life after Death: evolutionary experimentations in the aftermath of mass extinctions”

​

Stocker is the founder of Widening Inclusivity in the (Geo) Sciences (WInGS) at Virginia Tech, to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Geosciences field.  The Stocker Lab group focuses on a wide variety of both extant and extinct animals. Major themes include testing ecomorphological hypotheses and instances of convergent evolution.   Her research is based on direct observation and examination of skeletal specimens for comparative morphological descriptions and phylogenetic analyses. In order to add new data to those in existing museum collections, she has an active collaborative field program in the Triassic and Eocene. Her fieldwork mainly is in the American West and Southwest, but she also is involved in Permian-Triassic fieldwork in Tanzania.
